Sega's mascot, Sonic, has been a very busy hedgehog lately. He has a new platformer game coming out for Wii U and 3DS, another trip with Mario to the Olympics, and was yesterday confirmed to be a playable guest character in Nintendo's new Super Smash Bros. game. Well now, Sonic can add "Cartoon Network star" to his ever-growing resume, with Sega's announcement of a new CG cartoon, Sonic Boom.

Sonic Boom, a co-production between Sega of America and the France-based Genao Productions, is an all-new, character-driven series that will focus on comedy with a healthy dose of action and robot-fighting. This is the fifth animated series to star the blue blur, and the first new one in over a decade. Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka will act as a supervisor to ensure that the show remains true to the games.

The cartoon will feature a main cast comprising heroes Sonic, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy Rose, with Dr. Eggman naturally as the villain. The show promises to present a rogues gallery of additional villains both old and completely original. In addition, Sega confirmed in a comment on their official Sonic Facebook page that the cast of the Sonic games from 2010 onward (as of Sonic Colours) will voice their characters in the show.

Sonic Boom will debut in autumn 2014. It will air on Cartoon Network in the US, and channels GULLI and CANAL J in France.
