"The Winter King" is the sixth episode of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake.
Synopsis[]
Fionna and Simon discover their best selves, and a possible solution to all their problems, in a wintery kingdom. Marshall Lee helps Gary with a baking project.[1]
Plot[]
In Fionna-world, Gary Prince knocks on Fionna's door to her apartment and asks why she hasn't texted him back since she was supposed to help him shop today. When Gary goes inside, he sees Fionna's apartment is messy and assumes that she's been robbed. Marshall Lee comes out of her bathroom shower to tell him that this is just the way she lives. Gary is freaked out by Marshall Lee and wonders who he is. After Marshall Lee introduces himself, he asks Gary who he is.
Meanwhile in another alternate reality known as Winterworld, Simon, Fionna and Cake are beamed into an ice kingdom and are immediately pursued by the Scarab, who tagged along with the three after the events of the previous episode. They're immediately saved by a mysterious ice wizard known as The Winter King, who freezes the Scarab in place. Fionna is enamored by him and Simon realizes that the Winter King is an alternate version of himself. After the Winter King introduces himself, Cake takes his crown and runs off but is caught and brought back by one of the Winter King's double giants. Fionna insists that Cake didn't mean any harm. The Winter King is amused that the cat is named Cake and asks Fionna who she is. After Fionna introduces herself, she tells him that the reason they need his crown is to make Simon cursed and magical again in order to bring magic back to their world and protect it. Simon agrees with Fionna when the Winter King asks if it's true. The Winter King says while they can't take his crown, he has a solution to their problem. Fionna tells him that although it sounds nuts, she thinks she's been dreaming about him and he says he's not surprised - he's radical.
The Winter King invites Simon, Fionna and Cake inside and Simon is surprised by the way the Winter King's throne room looks. The Winter King says his entire throne room is made of clear ice and Fionna (who's shivering along with Cake) says she can tell. The Winter King has some of his Ice Scouts bring some hot chocolate for his guests. Simon asks the Winter King how he's so functional if he’s just another cursed Simon. In song, the Winter King claims that he was once like Simon was when dealing with the madness of the crown, dealing with the insanity until he used a force of sheer will power to regain his sanity, fashion his dreams and build his kingdom. Simon wonders how his alternate self conquered the madness since it's so hard to resist the crown's power and do something really wonderful. The Winter King claims that making something wonderful is as easy as manifesting his own reality and offers to show him how.
After finishing his song, he tells Simon that once he makes a duplicate magic crown, Fionna-world will be restored to its former state. Fionna asks the Winter King if he tinkers with the original curse then will she be able to fight in the new version since she got stomped in the last one. The Winter King gives Fionna an ice sword and has some Ice Scouts attack to test her abilities before having them stand down. Fionna is amazed since she was able to defend herself better than she did before. Cake asks if there's anything she desires since he's giving out gifts so she asks him to charge Fionna's phone. He does so and it's not only at 100%, it has signal now. Fionna sees a bunch of texts from Gary. Fionna finally responds to Gary that she's okay and the man in her apartment is Marshall Lee.
Back in Fionna-world, Gary is relieved that Fionna is okay but is upset that she's flaking out on him again. Marshall Lee says that Fionna gets flighty. Gary goes to leave and tells Marshall Lee that he has a ton of errands and baking to do. Marshall Lee asks if Gary was the one who made the bag of biscuits Fionna was carrying around and says that they were good. Gary thanks him and Marshall Lee asks if there's food where he's heading. Gary says probably so Marshall Lee decides to leave with him and asks if he's ever heard of this place called "JOY". After they leave, Ellis P. suddenly comes out from underneath Fionna's bed and says to bring him back something.
Back in Winterworld, Simon asks the Winter King if he's sure it's not too much trouble and he responds by telling Simon to relax and it'll take just one week to make a duplicate crown in his laboratory. Cake is incredulous but Fionna tells her not to be rude. The Winter King tells them in the meantime they should feel free to partake in the pleasures of the Winter Kingdom. Cake tells Fionna that they should check out a Candy mountain since it looks gnarly but the Winter King tells her no because that place is forbidden but he quickly corrects himself and says it can be dangerous out there.
When the Winter King asks Simon to help him in the laboratory, some Ice Scouts ask Fionna to join them in their training session so Fionna tells Cake not to move so she won't get lost. However, Cake slides down the ice over to the frozen Scarab and kicks his ice prison. Scarab telepathically calls Cake and Fionna an abomination and a disease and tells her he'll break free from his prison.
Back in Fionna-world, it's snowing Marshall Lee and Gary head to the candy supply store. They head inside and Gary tells the cashier (a human version of Lord Monochromicorn) that he's there to pick up his order. Gary then tells Marshall Lee that they have the best cocoa powder and because it's so rich you can't even try a grain of it unadulterated without going mad. He has Marshall Lee try some and he does, causing him to suggest that this is why Gary's biscuit boys are so special. Gary blushes before saying he calls them pastrymenschen and reveals that he's been working on the prototypes for a long time - he has a 64-step business plan. Marshall Lee says all he wants is more pastry people and asks what it's gonna take to make that happen. Gary says he'll need his own bakery where he can make what he wants so that means cash mostly. He also says there's a couple of investors in town that he really wants to meet called the Lemoncarbs (human gender-swapped counterparts of the Lemongrabs), who are these rich twins behind a food empire and one meeting with them could change his life. Marshall Lee casually says he's sure he's heard his mom talk about them before or something. Gary apologizes and thinks he's boring Marshall Lee who thinks it's cool since Gary's so passionate so it's impressive to him. The cashier gives Gary his order so Gary thanks him, while Marshall is seen blushing.
Back in Winterworld, Simon thanks the Winter King for the new suit (which is exactly the suit he wore before) and the Winter King says nonsense because he looked ugly before. The Winter King places his crown on a duplication machine and starts the process. Simon asks if there's a Betty in this world and the Winter King thinks for a minute before casually calls her "the dead one" and he hasn't thought about her in a long time. Simon asks how he could say such a thing because she was the great love of their life. The Winter King says that's not how he remembers it but tells Simon that once he gets the new crown then he can always use it to make an Ice Betty, then he tells him he's just kidding and that would be unethical. An alarm starts to blare and a pink cloud zaps lightning into the laboratory. Once the cloud dissipates, the Winter King and Simon see an insane person riding some Banana Guards. Simon is confused and thinks it's Princess Bubblegum but the Winter King tells him no - it's the Candy Queen, sworn enemy of the Winter Kingdom and a terrible nuisance to him personally. The Winter King tries to use his powers against her but remembers that he's not wearing his crown. The Candy Queen traps the Winter King with gum as he goes for the crown. When Simon pleads for her to stop, an enthused Candy Queen decides to kidnap both Simon and the Winter King. Fionna and Cake see this, but the Ice Scouts calmly explain that this always happens. They then ask Fionna that to she aids them with her magic sword then they can rescue both Simon and the Winter King. Fionna is excited over the action stuff.
Back in Fionna-world, Marshall Lee and Gary spend the day together and after getting cups of cappuccinos, they waited until Beatrice Buttler locked up for the night before they made their way to the bakery. Marshall Lee tells Gary it's kinda punk that he's stealing kitchen time after closing time. Gary goes in and Marshall Lee makes a secret phone call.
Back in Winterworld, the Candy Queen takes both Simon and the Winter King back to her mountain. Trapped in gum, the Candy Queen puts them both in a cage and they get out of the gum, but their wrists are cuffed with a candy person and the gum cage is strong. Simon demands for her to let them out and the Candy Queen tells them she doesn't do requests, only originals. The Winter King tells Simon not to worry since she kidnaps him a lot and thinks they belong together. Simon wonders why. The Candy Queen breaks out into a song and reveals her plans to put them in a blender with her and set the oven to 350 degrees so they'll be baked together. Simon thinks it's actually a nice metaphor but the Candy Queen reveals it's not a metaphor, she's being literal, horrifying both of them. Simon asks if this really happens a lot, as Winter King reveals this part is an escalation.
In Fionna-world, Gary makes Marshall Lee a gingerbread man and after he eats it, he tells Gary that he's ready for investors like the Lemoncarbs. Gary tells him no, they still need work and he would just die of embarrassment if he showed the prototypes to the Lemoncarbs. Marshall Lee starts to cancel the meeting with them but they show up, surprising Gary.
In Winterworld, Fionna, Cake and the Ice Scouts attack the candy people as the Winter King calls for help. Simon says that the Candy Queen needs their help since he knows there's a brilliant person in there somewhere trying to get out. The Winter King says they don't need to fix her, they just need to be rescued and yells for the Ice Scouts to help them.
In Fionna-world, Gary introduces himself to the Lemoncarbs and presents the pastrymenchen. They're skeptical but they begin eating the pastries. They agree that they taste nice but they hate their faces. Gary presents the stories behind the pastrymenchen which follows a montage of Fionna and Cake brutally slaughtering the candy people along the way. When Gary asks what they think, the Lemoncarbs leave and say they hate it, crushing Gary.
In Winterworld, Fionna and Cake find the Candy Queen about to drop Simon and the Winter King into a mixer to turn them into a batter. Fionna makes it up to the top and Simon begs Fionna to stop since there's something wrong with her brain that can be fixed. The Winter King on the other hand tells her it can't so knock her out. Fionna and the Candy Queen charge at each other and Fionna is able to knock her down with one kick before freeing both of them. Fionna gives the Winter King his crown back and he calls her both the beauty and the beast. Fionna calls him Ice Prince and wonders if she's dreaming. The Winter King tells her to embrace him and they share a kiss, but suddenly the crown loses its magic and the Winter King turns back into Simon, rapidly ages and begs Fionna to help him before turning to dust, shocking her, Cake and the main-timeline's Simon. The Ice Scouts, the Winter Kingdom and everything created by the Winter King melts due to his death.
Meanwhile, the Candy Queen turns back into Princess Bubblegum, shocking Simon. Princess Bubblegum is happy to be free as she kicks the useless crown away. Simon realizes that the Winter King had cast a spell to deflect his madness onto her. Princess Bubblegum reveals that he cast his madness directly into her brain-basket, so Simon calls him a wad. After Simon keeps pointing out what the Winter King did, Princess Bubblegum says she doesn't want to dwell on it. Simon apologizes to her on behalf of his alternate self. Princess Bubblegum says that there's much work to be done and asks where her beloved candy citizens are. Cake stretches herself to block her view of the destroyed candy citizens and says they'll look. Princess Bubblegum says it's like a fairy tale and Fionna's kiss broke the curse before manifesting a lollipop, pinning it on Fionna and thanking her before kissing her cheek. Fionna sadly says she's not a knight. Later on, Fionna sits down and wonders what she did wrong. The Scarab appears and says that what she did wrong was existing before he tries to attack her, Cake, and Simon again before they teleport out of that universe, angering the Scarab.
Back in Fionna-world, Gary and Marshall Lee clean up the bakery and Marshall Lee says at least they liked the flavors. He apologizes to Gary for springing that on him and says he thought he was helping. Gary tells Marshall Lee that it's probably good they came now because he would've fiddled with that recipe forever. Marshall Lee asks where a chocolate dipped strawberry meet a cupcake anyway. Gary tells Marshall Lee not to make fun of him but Marshall Lee says he really wants to know. Gary tells him the story of it beginning at a slumber party/candy zombie outbreak.
In an alternate reality where everyone was a baby version of themselves, Simon tries his alternate self's crown which was squeaky and says it's not gonna work either. Fionna is sad because she thought back in the previous universe she was living the dream but she was hurting a bunch of innocent candy people. She wonders if she's been hurting people in all these universes. Simon tells Fionna that place was messed up because that Simon was messed up. He promised Fionna that the next world will have a crown that will work and he'll be cursed the right way. Simon gives Fionna a fist bump and the Baby Finn from that universe also joins in on their fist bump.

Trivia[]
- The Winter King resembles the Princess Bubblegum from the original universe. Both are intellectual, have a science lab and a prosperous kingdom. They also had a common enemy who was the perfect opposite of each other between the timelines. The PB of this universe is the equivalent of the Ice King kidnapping instead of PB, the Winter King.
- The reverse roles parallel with the main timeline is also depicted visually. The Candy Queen's kingdom had giant ice cream cones with a shape referencing the mountains from the Ice Kingdom.
- One concept art from Steve Wolfhard has a note saying the Winter Kingdom's Ice Scouts have pikes and hair bits "to connect them to the Banana Guards".
- Candy Queen having an unhealthy crush on the Winter King mirrors the early seasons of the original show when the Ice King was obsessed with Princess Bubblegum. She also had a keyboard just like the Ice King had.
- One concept from Steve Wolfhard reveals that while the Winter King projected the crown's madness effect onto Princess Bubblegum, his mind still had some minor effects from it, so he just attenuated them. This can explain why he seemed to have forgotten Betty, since this is known to be one of the effects of the crown.
- Although this was not present in the episode, artist Steve Wolfhard revealed that the executive producer Adam Muto thought some minor lore behind the Baby World seen at the end of the episode: BMO's wish to Prismo resulted in this world, but he ended up turned into a baby monitor.[2]
- When the Winter King turns back into Simon, he is seen with the same streak of white hair that the original Simon has right before aging and turning into dust.
Cultural References[]
- The Ice Scouts resemble the servant Pearls from Steven Universe.[3]
- When the Candy Queen reveals her giant blender, she plays on her synthesizer Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor.[4]
Episode Connections[]
- Cheers is seen on Fionna's TV in her apartment again. Cheers was previously referenced in the episodes "Simon & Marcy", "Fionna Campbell" and "Simon Petrikov". The latter two episodes have shown Cheers on Fionna's TV in "Fionna Campbell" and Simon's TVs in "Simon Petrikov".
- The Winter King and Simon being locked in Candy Queen's prison mirrors the events happened in "Prisoners of Love".
- Candy Queen and The Winter King marriage sequence mirrors the events happened in "When Wedding Bells Thaw".
- Candy Queen's eyes references the glasses from the Yak the main universe Princess Bubblegum used to ride when she was a kid in the flashback shown in "Bonnibel Bubblegum".
- Fionna and Cake being able to contaminate other universes removing their magic was foreshadowed in "Cake the Cat", when Cake turned a Hot Dog Knight into a regular sausage.
- The Lemoncarbs managing a food company is somewhat ironic, given the fact their Ooo genderbent counterparts starved back in "All Your Fault".
- "Lemoncarbs" was the same nickname Tree Trunks used to refer to the Earl of Lemongrab in "Mystery Dungeon".
- Gary's story regarding why the chocolate strawberry and cupcake love each other is a reference to the events of "Slumber Party Panic."
- The Winter King's glasses gleamed the same way the Ice Prince's glasses did in Fionna's dream from "Fionna Campbell".
- Fionna was also enamored with him like she was with Ice Prince in her dream.
