"The Hare and the Sprout" is the second season premiere of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake. It is the eleventh episode overall.
Synopsis[]
After saving their world from Scarab, Fionna and Cake attempt to find a place for themselves in it while helping their friends make a home out of an abandoned lot. Back in Ooo, Huntress Wizard makes a shocking discovery -- and turns to Simon for help.[1]
Plot[]
In the new season, Astrid is recapping a story she wrote based on how Prismo created Fionna and Cake, who were female versions of Finn and Jake, but Fionna-world went from being magical to being boring, so Fionna and Cake journeyed to Ooo, where they reunited with their best friend, referring to herself. Simon Petrikov interrupts by asking if that's really what happened, but Astrid insists that it did.
She continues by saying that after Fionna and Cake journeyed across the Multiverse, Fionna decided that she liked her world the way it was, so she and Cake returned home to save it from being destroyed by the Scarab, and then some magical stuff happened and Fionna became her own person, rather than just a copy of Finn.
Princess Bubblegum interrupts Astrid by asking where Finn is and Simon tells her the last time he saw Finn, he was heading to Huntress Wizard's place. Marceline asks if Finn and Huntress Wizard were dating again and Simon shrugs, so Marceline insists that she needed to give Huntress Wizard a call. Princess Bubblegum asks if Marceline has her number, which Marceline denies. Astrid clears her throat and tells them that Fionna lived happily ever after.
In Fionna-world, Fionna wakes up when her BMO alarm clock goes off to DJ Slime on the radio. Fionna seems happier than she did before and listens to DJ Slime until she hears him start to play a single from DJ Flame, so she quickly turns it off and turns on her TV to see Cheers playing. She changes the channel a few times, where different shows are now playing on different channels rather than seeing Cheers on every channel like before. Fionna throws on a shirt and invites Cake over for breakfast, while also complimenting Cake on living it up independently in her new apartment in the building next door to her own. Cake stretches over from her window to Fionna's apartment to see what's for breakfast. Fionna offers waffle hot dogs, but Cake decides to stick with coffee, but she doesn't like the taste. Fionna is ready for their big day, but Cake wraps around Fionna and takes her out of the apartment despite the fact that Fionna forgot to put her pants on.
Later, Fionna, who's now fully dressed, travels around with Cake and they help one of Fionna's former employers with some heavy-lifting. Her former boss is grateful and impressed, even admitting that if she had this kind of hustle before, she would've kept her on. She gives Fionna some fairy lights she asked for, with Fionna saying that Marshall Lee would love them.
Fionna and Cake then visit a paper office where Fionna's old boss (who's a human alternate version of Turtle Princess) gives her 15% off of her order to copy a bunch of flyers for Gary Prince's new spot called The Sweet Spot as a token of appreciation for saving their world from the Scarab. He also apologizes for firing her last year, but Fionna forgives him and acknowledges that she sucked. Afterwards, they wonder what Gary's baking up today, but a child notices that Cake is a "magic kitty" and Cake happily confirms that she is. The child asks her to turn into an elephant, a horse and then a cowboy riding a horse riding an elephant, all of which Cake transforms into. The child is so happy that she cries tears of joy and declares that she loves her.
Cake then catches up with Fionna and wonders what's next on the list, which Fionna states that they need super fine dark cocoa powder. Cake gasps and realizes where they're going, prompting Fionna to tease Cake since she has a crush on M-Cron. Suddenly, a tour bus drives by and Queenie, Fionna's former boss, spitefully tells everyone on board that on their left, they'll see someone who brought destruction to their fair city, Fionna Campbell. However, everyone is amazed to see Fionna and view her as a hero who saved their world. Queenie tells the people on the bus that she fired Fionna, leading Fionna to remind her that she saved her life. Queenie tauntingly asks if she wants a little trophy, but Fionna fires back and says the only reward she needs is never working for her and calls her a cheapskate, surprising the passengers. Queenie gets angry and orders the driver to stop the bus before hopping off and telling Fionna that while the citizens may love her for now, deep down she knows that she's a true loser, angering Fionna. Cake calms Fionna down by telling her Queenie's not worth it, but Fionna crumples up a flyer and throws it at Queenie's head and calls her a "Jumped up Abadeer wannabe". Queenie is angry, but when the passengers look at Fionna and one smiles at her, Fionna and Cake nervously wave at them before Fionna decides to leave with Cake, agreeing that Queenie was not worth it.
They finally make it to M-Cron's store where Cake stretches herself to look taller. M-Cron gives Cake a bag of candy, which she accepts and when Fionna teases Cake, she pushes Fionna away to find the cocoa. As Cake tries the candy, Fionna looks for the cocoa powder and finds it, but Lady Cutter (a human genderbent version of Sir Slicer) steals it from Fionna, says that it would make her lava cakes "tsk tsk" ane tauntingly thanks Fionna for getting it off the shelf for her. Fionna attacks Lady Cutter and steals it back from her, right before throwing Cake her wallet to pay M-Cron for the cocoa powder. As they leave, M-Cron calls Fionna a dork (similar to how Sir Slicer called Finn a dork in "Blood Under the Skin").
Cake catches up with Fionna and scolds her because it's hard for her to keep her cool without Fionna trashing M-Cron's store before giving Fionna her wallet back and the receipt for the cocoa powder. However, when Fionna sees that M-Cron left his number on the receipt for Cake to text him, she shows Cake, who's excited. Fionna gets a call from Simon, revealing that they still keep in contact despite the fact that Simon lives in Ooo and Fionna and Cake live in Fionna-world. Fionna and Cake are happy to hear from Simon, who's taking a walk in the Candy Forest and decided to check in. Fionna says they're doing good, but cringes when seeing a flyer of DJ Flame, reminding her of how he broke up with her over text but still tells Simon they're doing good. As Cake tears up all of DJ Flame's flyers, Fionna is talking to Simon, who's telling her about how he leaves for Wiz Arts tomorrow and he's excited because he loves teaching and being around magic, although he somberly admits that magic ruined his relationship and drove him insane for centuries, but then cheerfully says he's in a much better place now. Fionna tells Simon she's proud of him, so he asks about The Sweet Spot and Fionna says it's coming along great, the grand opening is tomorrow and says she wishes he can be there. Simon asks if she's bringing anyone special, but Fionna says she's not thinking about that stuff right now. When Fionna sees that Cake covered a big picture of DJ Flame with the flyers, she scolds Cake and tells Simon she has to go, so Simon tells her to have fun. After ending the call, Simon puts an orange on Choose Goose's tombstone, revealing that Choose Goose died and Simon says that nothing rhymes with orange.
Later, the former Vampire King, who became an ordinary lion when Princess Bubblegum removed the vampire essence from his body, grabs the orange while Huntress Wizard is on the hunt, tracking the lion to a cave, where a severely weakened Finn is laying. He hallucinates three Huntress Wizards surrounding him, with the third one feeding him the juice from the orange. The real Huntress Wizard shoots an arrow at the one with the orange before noticing Finn, who's really surrounded with the lion, an eagle and a cow. As the lion and eagle leave, Huntress Wizard asks if Finn has been training animals to feed him before telling him he's so lazy, but when she kicks his foot, he winces in pain and she's horrified when she sees the scars on his back, quickly realizing he's been poisoned.
Back in Fionna-world, Fionna is going over the list with Cake and realizes that they got what they needed before seeing The Sweet Spot, which makes her happy. They meet with Gary, Ellis P., the Squirrel and Marshall Lee, bringing everything that Gary needed for the grand opening. Gary thanks them by giving them pastries he baked and asks Fionna how much he owes her, but she tells him not to worry about it and says she likes helping her friends. Later, as Marshall Lee is playing the guitar, Fionna is surprised by Hunter, who shows her some roses that keep springing up all over the park which reminded him of "Rosa rubiginosa", prompting Fionna to sniff the roses which smelled amazing. Hunter tells Fionna that he thought she'd like one, causing Fionna to blush, but Hunter adds that he meant for The Sweet Spot, causing Fionna to agree with him. Fionna thanks Hunter, who notices that she's bleeding on her hand, so Fionna looks at her right hand which has a thorn in it, plus the cuts (unbeknownst to her and Hunter) look similar to Finn's scars on his back. Hunter removes the thorn and covers it with a towel, asking if it hurts, which causes Fionna to blush again and nervously say no.
Everyone at The Sweet Spot is decorating and setting everything up and after they get finished, Marshall Lee asks Hunter if he's sticking around since they're going to have a celebration, but Hunter says no since he has an early day tomorrow and tells them goodnight. After Fionna tells Hunter to have a great day, Marshall Lee teases Fionna by asking if she's going to walk Hunter home, leading Fionna to playfully tell him no and asks him if he would. Gary prepares drinks for everyone and says his dreams are finally coming true, even better than he envisioned, plus Marshall Lee adds that he finally has a back yard. Gary tells everyone it's thanks to all of them for making his dreams come true, especially Fionna. They then cheer "To the morrow!"
Back in Ooo, Huntress Wizard is trying everything she can to heal Finn, using hyper viper to turn some leaves pink and sprout a pink flower, which she gives Finn, who spits it out. Huntress Wizard then throws her potion bottles aside and breaks off a stick to use as incense to wake Finn up before asking Finn what poisoned him: a cockatrice, a naga, a medium-sized manticore or a cone snail. Finn weakly tells her he fought a bear with Simon, surprising Huntress Wizard, who asks if he means "Ice King" Simon. Finn passes out again, worrying Huntress Wizard.
Back in Fionna-world, Fionna and Cake dream about fighting a bunch of knights, who turn out to be their friends, Gary, Marshall Lee, Hunter, M-Cron, Ellis P. and what looked like Martin Mertens. The tower is destroyed and Fionna and Cake are woken up by Queenie, who taunts them about making something out of what used to be a dump. Fionna tells Queenie to shove off, leading Queenie to reveal that their spot belongs to her, surprising Fionna. Queenie then works with her guards to shove off everyone who worked hard to build The Sweet Spot.
Back in Ooo, Simon begins teaching his first class at Wiz Arts about magical artifacts, leading Pep Mint to taunt him about how he's teaching a class about himself because he's so old, but Simon simply tells him "Hi Pep", brushing off his insult and throwing him a cat, saying "Mommies say hi", angering Pep. Simon continues by saying that the young wizards may have heard about him being something of an Ice King and while he's still a cool guy, he promises he's out that drama behind him. Huntress Wizard brings Finn to Simon and demands an explanation for Finn's scars, so Simon, worried about Finn, explains to her that he was attacked by a green bear and when Finn swooped in to save him, he was thrown violently into a weird thorny bush. Huntress Wizard demands to know where the bush was, so Simon tells her that he called it The Heart of the Forest. Huntress Wizard orders Simon to keep Finn alive and forget everything he heard about that place before flying away.
Back in Fionna-world, Fionna and Cake are angry that Queenie kicked them all out of The Sweet Spot, plus Gary is heartbroken that all his dreams were in there. Queenie spitefully tells him that they're her dreams now. As Marshall Lee comforts Gary, Fionna boldly declares that although she doesn't know how yet, she's going to fix this.
Back in Ooo, Huntress Wizard flies to the forest and makes her way to the same bush where Finn was thrown onto and prepares to siphon a cure just as the same bear that attacked Finn and Simon follows her.

Trivia[]
- Astrid writing a story about Fionna and Cake's adventures while throwing in a scenario about the two of them being her best friends is similar to Simon Petrikov's own stories he wrote about them back when he was the Ice King.
- However, Astrid's story is much more accurate, as Fionna and Cake were real all along, and the events in her story transpired in the previous season.
- The beginning of this episode is similar to this series' premiere, except that Fionna is much happier than she was before, and nearly everyone is grateful to her for saving their world from the Scarab.
- The exception to this is Queenie, who still despises Fionna, and even mocks her in front of everyone on the tour bus.
- This episode also reveals that Cake is now living in her own apartment, which is in a building right next to Fionna's.
- Gary Prince and Marshall Lee have been recast with Harvey Guillén and Kris Kollins, respectively.
- In the original series, Prince Gumball (who Gary Prince used to be) was voiced by Neil Patrick Harris and Keith Ferguson and he was voiced by Andrew Rannells in the first season of this series. Marshall Lee was originally voiced by Donald Glover in both the original series and in the first season of this series.
- Huntress Wizard returns as a major protagonist in this season of Fionna & Cake. In addition, the role was recast with Ashly Burch, who previously voiced Bun Bun in the original series episode, "Bun Bun".
- Huntress Wizard was previously voiced by Maria Bamford and Jenny Slate in the original series. Bamford voiced the character originally but in "Flute Spell", which was Huntress Wizard's first major appearance, Slate took over the role until the final season of the original series.
- Lady Cutter, a human gender-bent version of Sir Slicer, appears in Fionna-world, attempting to take cocoa powder from Fionna.
- In addition to appearing with the same transitional effect as Sir Slicer, Cutter also calls Fionna a dork, just as Slicer did to Finn in the original series episode, "Blood Under the Skin".
- It is revealed that Choose Goose died after the events of "Cake the Cat", as Simon visited his headstone.
- Cake's remark about her liking fish sticks to M- might be a reference to a classic South Park gag.
- It's revealed that Finn had been poisoned in the previous season during the bear attack in the episode, "Simon Petrikov". Huntress Wizard made this discovery when she saw the scars on Finn's back and learned that he and Simon entered the Heart of the Forest, a place where she warned him that no one should enter.
- Hints of Finn's poisoning were dropped in this episode when Princess Bubblegum mentioned she hasn't seen Finn in a while, plus Finn was weak and hallucinated seeing three Huntress Wizards at the same time.
- When Hunter gave Fionna some roses, her hand started bleeding which led Hunter to take care of it. The cuts on Fionna's hand resemble Finn's scars on his back, which could mean that Hunter caring for Fionna's hand mirror how Huntress Wizard is trying to save Finn, especially since Hunter and Fionna are alternate versions of Huntress Wizard and Finn. Marceline wonders if Finn and Huntress Wizard were dating again, confirming that their relationship is on and off.
- It is revealed that Simon has become a professor at Wiz Arts.
- It is also revealed that Peppermint Butler is still attending the wizard academy in his younger form. He first enrolled in the academy in the Distant Lands episode, "Wizard City".
- It’s also strange that Simon is allowed to be a teacher at wiz art because it usually forbidden for non wizards to enter the city, the reason he allowed to visit is currently unknown.
- Simon reveals to Fionna and Cake that he is unsure of what Princess Bubblegum thinks of him, and mentions that he used to kidnap her a lot back when he was the Ice King.
Episode Connections[]
- Cheers is once again mentioned and referenced in this episode. The TV series was previously referenced in the original series episode "Simon & Marcy", as well as the entire first season of Fionna & Cake.
- Finn is once again seen with the tattoo of Jake on his chest. It was previously seen in the Distant Lands episodes, "Obsidian" and "Together Again", as well as the first season Fionna & Cake episodes, "Simon Petrikov" and "Cake the Cat".
- Huntress Wizard crossing a magic zip line she made is a callback to "The Wild Hunt" when she and Finn chased after Grumbo, one of Uncle Gumbald's creations.
- Finn's scars from the bear he and Simon took on in the second episode of the previous season, titled "Simon Petrikov" are seen again, plus a flashback of Finn taking on the bear before ending up in the white wooden bush from the aforementioned episode.
- The reveal that Finn had been poisoned after the bear attack could be why Huntress Wizard advised him that no one should ever enter the Heart of the Forest.
- Queenie taking over Gary's project is similar to her counterpart, the King of Ooo, taking over the Candy Kingdom from "The Comet" to "Everything Stays".
- Furthermore, Queenie showing Fionna, Cake, Marshall Lee, Gary, Ellis P. and everyone else the property where "The Sweet Spot" was set to open is similar to how Marceline showed Finn and Jake that the cave they planned to make their home in the original series episode, "Evicted!", belongs to her.
