Croak dreams are dreams that reveal the circumstances of the dreamer's death. The episode "The New Frontier" was the first episode mentioning croak dreams. Jake was the one who had the croak dream, which was about a Banana Man and a rocket ship in space. The Banana Man had a helmet on but Jake didn't, so he started to run out of air in the hard vacuum of space. He tried to reach the rocket ship using his Stretchy Powers but suffocated. At the end of croak dreams, one sees the Cosmic Owl. Jake states that the appearance of the Cosmic Owl at the end of a croak dream is proof that it was in fact a croak dream. It is unknown if one can cheat fate by avoiding a croak dream's circumstances, but Jake says that one can't. It seems possible that one can avoid their fate with the intervention of another, as Finn interfered in Jake's croak, saving his life. However, at the end of the episode, Jake states that what happened on the episode is supposed to happen again when Finn isn't around. In "The Lich", Finn has a croak dream just like the one Jake had except Finn wasn't the one that was killed. Billy was the one who perished by the hand of the Lich. the proof that this was a croak dream was the fact that the Cosmic Owl was shown as a cameo there. Just as Jake explained, "[I]f a cosmic owl is in a dream[,] then it's a croak dream..." making Finn's dream a croak dream. Although a croak dream, it hasn't been explained if Finn will die in the sequel of "The Lich"

Furthermore, in the episode "Prisoners of Love," even Ice King has seen the Cosmic Owl while passed out (Finn kicked him), who calls him a sociopath. It is unclear whether or not this is a croak dream or not. Ice King is seen naked, only his beard covering him. He says he "tries so hard to be a good husband," but once he is confronted by the Cosmic Owl's label of "sociopath," he calls the Owl a "big nerd" and says he should try to be "cool like [him]" and then Ice King flies off into the distance of space.
