"Is That You?" is the nineteenth episode in the sixth season of Adventure Time. It's the one hundred and seventy-fifth episode overall.

Synopsis

A memorial service for Prismo turns into a resurrecting adventure in another dimension.

Plot

The episode begins with Finn and Jake doing a memorial service for Prismo by dancing around a small table with a jar of the last of Prismo's pickles. After Jake eats the last pickle, they rush to bed so that that scene will be the last thing they think about before dreaming.

Finn then wakes up, and sees Jake re-enacting many scenes from past episodes, such as Everything Burrito, Bacon Pancakes, and Tough Guy Contest. However, as soon as Finn disturbs Jake's re-enactment, Jake explodes.

Finn later realizes that he must not disturb the reenactments and must make Jake believe he is correctly in those moments to avoid Jake exploding. Once Jake begins to reenact the Prismo Pickle scene that opened the episode, Finn plays along, culminating in Finn realizing the pickle jar is a portal to another dimension. Finn touches the jar and is teleported to the dimension.

Here, Jake and Finn exist in a constant loop of themselves in a world constructed by Prismo as a 'Plan B' should he ever die (as he had 'died' in the episode Wake Up). Finn finds Jake asleep in a bed, which brings Prismo to life as the dream of Jake. Finn wakes Jake up, then the two walk away discussing what is going on. The next loop of Jake falls asleep and Prismo tells Finn he must stop the next loop of Finn from waking Jake up, so that Prismo can live.

Finn leaves Jake and Prismo in the room, walks up to the looped version of Finn who is about to wake up the looped Jake, then stops Finn from waking looped Jake up. Looped Finn explodes (as Jake did at the beginning of the episode when interrupted from his reenactments), and turns into a sword for Finn, the Finn Sword.

Sleeping looped Jake continues to sleep and dream of the now resurrected Prismo. Finn and Jake welcome Prismo back. The looped Jake who is asleep then morphs into the Old Man Prismo who was originally turned into dust by the Lich, and the episode ends.

Trivia

  • This is the episode confirmed by past credits to feature Prismo and The Lich.
  • Although appearing in the promotional art for the episode, Princess Bubblegum did not appear in the actual episode.
  • Prismo is resurrected in this episode through a convoluted plan.
  • Finn's backpack is not present in this episode.
  • Jake asking if the world was "just some goof's dream" may be a possible reference to the "Finn is in a coma" fan-theory.

Cultural References

  • Finn and Jake's pickle ritual is similar in style to the rites of ancient mystery religions such as the Dionysian Mysteries and the Eleusinian Mysteries. Specifically, the white clothes, use of singing, and use of instruments are all thought to have been fundamental parts of ancient mystery rituals.
  • The plot of this episode shares many similarities with the plot of the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver series, particularly the deliberate creation of a time loop and subsequently breaking it to form a temporal paradox, as well as one of the primary protagonists being transformed into a sword as a result of the time loop.

Storyline analysis

  • Finn gets his first major sword since the Grass Sword, called the Finn Sword. The first time the Finn Sword was seen was in "Breezy" when it was being held by Princess Bubblegum in Finn's vision.
