Gunther is a wizard, formerly a dinosaur, who appeared in the episode "Evergreen." He is Urgence Evergreen's apprentice, and one of the few characters known to exist before the Mushroom War. He became a wizard after wearing Evergreen's wish-granting magic crown in an attempt to stop a Catalyst Comet from striking Earth, but would fail due to his actual wish being to be like Evergreen, thus corrupting the crown into an artifact that would curse future wearers.

Appearance[]

Before putting on Evergreen's crown, Gunther was a green theropod dinosaur with three fingers on each hand. He had a green tail and a dark green collar of skin around his neck, reminiscent of Shelby's clitellum. As a wizard, Gunther becomes nearly a clone of Evergreen; his skin turns light blue, his tail disappears, he grows long white facial hair, gains eyes like Evergreen's, as well as a long and pointy nose resembling his master's.

Personality[]

Gunther is generally very playful and silly. He cares for his master, Evergreen, although Gunther resents him when he is ordered around. Gunther's brain has been altered by Evergreen, most likely to enhance his intelligence. At the end of the episode, it becomes apparent that Gunther's deepest wish is to be like Evergreen; this wish grants him magical ice powers, but he loses his sanity and his features are changed into Evergreen's as a result and he would only say two words: "Gunther, no!" This is due to the crown reacting to how he perceived Evergreen to be: a man who is constantly firing ice magic and ordering people around.

In "Broke His Crown," Gunther's essence is seen in the crown and shown to still idolize Evergreen. He called the professor—actually Simon Petrikov—the smartest man he knew next to his master.

Trivia[]

  • His name is randomly used by anyone wearing the Ice Crown. This may be a side effect of Gunther's wish to be like his master, reflecting Evergreen’s treatment of Gunther. This explains why the Ice King calls many characters "Gunter", including his penguins, and even Marceline at one point.
