ok, hear me out. if you watch the episode susan strong, at the beginning, PB says that her great uncle GUMBALL cut down the trees. gumball as in prince gumball? perhaps this isnt enough proof for you. well when watching the episode Beutopia, you can see a skull lying on the ground wearing Fionnas bunny ear hat. now im sure alot of you are probably thinking, "but its all a fanfiction created by the Ice King!" well this may not be the case, Ice King has been shown to have little to no memory of things from the past, completely forgetting he and marceline had a relationship, wo whose to say ice king didnt see all the things that happened and forgot about it all, thinking it up and writing it down as a "fanfic" —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thatnewdude29 (talk • contribs) 11:00, July 31, 2013

The Uncle Gumbald/Prince Gumball connection is a bit far-fetched, to say the least. I don't see any definitive evidence disproving it... however the same can be said for the alternative to that statement. The IK fanfic being real speculation is interesting, though. 1,000 years of mental manipulation can definitely affect your memory to a radical extent. But why don't any of the other characters ever talk about Fionna and Cake? No mentions or references outside of that isolated incident. I mean, as much backstory and overarching background plot as this show has, it is still a very random kid's show and isolated incidents like this aren't really proof of anything. "Jumping the gun" is the phrase that comes to mind here.

I think Fionna and Cake's world is used as a vehicle to explore the character's most inner emotions that can not be expressed by them personally or by the other characters. So Fionna and Cake's world is used to expand and explain the emotional relationships between the characters.
The best example for this is 'Bad Little Boy'. The story is told by Marceline and explores Finn and Marceline's relationship by using the parallel characters Fionna and Marshall Lee. You see a dialog on key aspects of their relationship: the awkward play fighting, the miscommunication, and how they flirt with each other. Through this dialog Marceline reveals that she has an idea of what Finn is thinking and realizes she is playing with his head. She shows that she doesn't want to hurt Finn feelings and really cares about Finn's friendship.
In 'Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake' we see Ice King's impression of Princess Bubblegum and Finn's relationship. (Which of course ends with a weird Ice King twist because IK is a total weirdo creep.)
I feel Fionna and Cake are not real unless they live in a parallel universe. This doesn't discredit them as characters, in fact I think it adds a richness to the stories told with them. The viewer can see the narrator's impression of each character by how they represent the individual parallel personae. I really hope season 6 has a Fionna and Cake episode told by Princess Bubblegum...

Marceline told a convincing story about them, and shes old enough to remember. So maybe they are real?

Uncle Gumbald is not Prince Gumball because Uncle Gumbald is older than PB and Prince Gumball is the same age as PB so it wouldn't make sense. BTW Fionna and Cake is fanfiction by the ice King so it makes even less sense.Abracadoodle (talk) 21:48, November 2, 2013 (UTC)Abracadoodle
Just because I find this interesting: What if Fionna was a past character and she was Finn's mom? Ice king ould be remebering past events. But he's a bit more than mildly insane, so he could have easily thought that the remaining few memories he has of Fionna were ideas he came up with. Marshall lee could easily be Marceline's older brother. Princess Bubblegum can change her age by adding or subtracted candy biomass, so it's not too far a stretch that she could alter her gender as well.
although I like this theory, I don't think it's very likely. However, it would be pretty cool.
