"Fionna Campbell" is the first episode of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake.
Synopsis[]
After a disastrous morning, Fionna can't afford to take Cake to the vet, so she seeks help from an unconventional source.
Plot[]
Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat work together to save a few citizens from a rat bus. However, two of the citizens fall out of the bus while more of them were still in it, leading Cake to catch the ones who fell out as Fionna chases after the rat bus. Fionna threw a pole and it stabbed one of its tires, leading the bus to get angry and chase after her. Fionna then picked up a hammer but the rat bus rammed into the scaffold Fionna was on so they all fell into a pool. Fionna gets onto a float as the rat bus tries to attack her, but a ninja star made out of ice suddenly freezes the pool. Fionna sees that Ice Prince saved her. Ice Prince warns her that the ice won’t hold the rat bus for long so he makes her a couple ice skates for her to use. Fionna then skates her way to the bus with Cake cheering her on and she attacks the bus, saving the rest of the citizens in the process with help from Cake. Ice Prince tells Fionna and Cake that they're great fighters and asked them if they wanted to join him on magical adventures. Fionna was enamored and Cake was more casual as they both agreed. When Fionna slowly went to take Ice Prince's hand, he suddenly starts imitating an alarm clock, confusing Fionna. The ice melts and Fionna and Cake fall into the pool water.
Fionna wakes up to hear her alarm clock which made her realize that she was dreaming. She snoozes the clock (which sounds like BMO) for 10 minutes before it went off again. Once she stops it, she looks around her apartment and turns on the TV only to be annoyed when she sees Cheers on every channel. It turns out Fionna Campbell is an ordinary working woman and Cake is her normal pet cat. As Fionna gets dressed for work, she tells Cake about her dream and says it was awesome. Cake begins acting weird after she sees a vision of some blue sparkles, so she goes and pushes the ice dispenser, which begins playing in the ice. Fionna grows concerned so she offers Cake a tuna sandwich. Cake swipes it away so Fionna books an appointment with the vet. Since there was an opening at lunch time, Fionna tells Cake that she's bringing her along to work.
Fionna then gets onto a bus and begins her job as a tour guide - a job she's not really invested in. She points out the city post office which is the oldest building, revealing in 1911 that there was a fire but Marshall Lee (a human version of Marshall Lee) interjected and said "stamped it out". Fionna comments on Marshall Lee, telling everyone he's the world's best unknown musician and they could catch him on the corner of 14th and Elm in an hour. When Fionna sees a statue of a couple penguins (who look like Gunter) at the aquarium, she remembers her dream and asks if anyone is into dream analysis before revealing her dream to everyone. Fionna also says it's like the universe is trying to tell her something. Marshall Lee suggests that she's dreaming about Ice Prince because she got dumped by DJ Flame (a human version of Flame Prince) and someone else asks if that's true. Fionna blushes and she brushes it off, saying that's not the reason why and it's way more significant. One person says she dreams a lot about being a hot dog (likely Hot Dog Princess or a Hot Dog Knight), another person says he dreams about being a banana (likely a Banana Guard) and a third person (who is a human gender-swapped counterpart of Fern) says her dream is too messed up to talk about. Everyone wonders what it is but Fionna wants them to focus and tells them that her dream is special and she can feel it means something.
Marshall Lee says she's bombing and Cake starts to meow so Fionna pulls her out of her kennel and says Cake agrees with her. They pass by an ice skating rink so Cake starts running to the back. Fionna pulls Cake off of the human version of Starchy and apologizes. A mysterious stranger says that's enough and reveals herself to be Fionna's boss, Queenie (a human version of Queen of Ooo). Queenie tells Fionna that she heard Fionna's tours suck so she went undercover to see if it's true. She says not only is it true but she brought along her cat. Fionna tells her that she had to because she needed to take Cake to the vet but Queenie assumes that Cake is rabid. Fionna tries to tell Queenie that Cake's a good cat but Cake runs to the bus door wanting to be let out so Queenie has the bus driver stop the bus. As everyone gets out, it's revealed that Marshall Lee never pays for his bus ride before he leaves. Queenie then fires Fionna who is shocked but then angrily reveals she never wanted the job in the first place. Queenie then tells her to bring back her uniform if she wants her deposit back.
Fionna walks with Cake down the sidewalk and passes by a bunch of people while complaining that nothing exciting ever happens and people are all boring. Fionna then gets stuck behind a few men (human versions of Banana Guards) and tries to get by them before angrily pushing them out of her way. A couple roller skaters then roll over to Fionna and compliment her on her jerkiness before offering her a chance to join their roller derby team. Fionna ripped their paper up before continuing on which hurt their feelings.
She then goes to a bakery where Gary Prince (a human version of Prince Gumball) works and angrily orders a coffee to go before adding a "please". Gary greets Fionna and Cake before seeing that Cake's acting weird and Fionna's in a bad mood. Fionna reveals that she just got fired, her cat's acting weird so she's gotta take her to the vet but she can't afford to now since she just got fired. Gary shows her a cookie that looks like a gingerbread man in order to cheer her up. He tells her it's still in development so he wanted her honest feedback so he goes to get the raspberry buttercream to put a scarf on it but sees that Fionna already ate it and said it was good. Gary tells Fionna it wasn't done and Fionna asks him how long they've known each other before she gets some raspberry buttercream on her finger and licks it. Gary replies that he guesses they've known each other forever so Fionna tells him that he should know by now that she has zero impulse control when it comes to sugary food. Gary tells her he's gonna make her more but this time he needs detailed feedback.
Cake sees more ice sparkles so she goes to the fridge but finds a mouse, so Gary and Fionna see her chase and catch it. Gary's boss, Beatrice Buttler (a human version of Butterscotch Butler) comes out and says no roughhousing in her bakery as she separates Cake from the mouse and throws Cake back to Fionna. Gary tells Beatrice that there shouldn't be mice in the bakery either. Beatrice picks up one of Gary's gingerbread man cookies and drops it on the ground, breaking his heart. She also puts a puff on the ground and the mouse chose to take the puff instead of his cookie. Beatrice then tells Gary to stick to what's traditional.
Fionna tells Gary to quit but he responds that he can't until he gets his recipe right. He also reminds her about her vet appointment so she quickly puts Cake in the kennel and takes off with the bag of biscuits, as Gary calls after her to give him notes. Fionna then runs into Marshall Lee again and accidentally gets coffee on her uniform, meaning she can't get her deposit back now. Marshall Lee wonders if Fionna quit her job but Fionna tells him she got fired. When Fionna asks him if he'd tell his mom she's going to be a bit late on rent this month, Marshall Lee refuses because they weren't talking but he does tell her that his friend Ellis can help fix Cake for the cookies Gary made.
Fionna then gets to the forest where she met someone who loves nature. Fionna assumes that the stranger was Ellis and asks if he could fix Cake, he says no and revealed his name was Hunter (a human gender-swapped counterpart of Huntress Wizard). Fionna walks away but Hunter asks if she was looking for Ellis and leads her to him. They see Ellis P. (a human version of Lumpy Space Prince) feeding squirrels some peanuts. When Fionna approaches Ellis P., he throws peanuts on her and tells the squirrels to eat her face. Fionna asks him for help and when he demands what was in it for him, she gives him the cookies. He accepts the payment.
Ellis P. gives Cake some catnip after rubbing it in his hands before revealing to Fionna that she knows what's wrong with Cake. Fionna initially says she didn't know but she then suggested that maybe Cake is sick or feels trapped in her crummy little apartment. Fionna goes on, pondering that maybe she's bored with everything and wishes the world was more magical. Fionna herself wishes the world was more magical as well and Ellis P. adds that he dreams he's a beautiful prince. Cake suddenly gets up and takes off while Fionna chases her down and Ellis P. screams "You're welcome!" to her. Cake sees the sparkles in an ice cream stand freezer and jumps into it.

Trivia[]
- This episode and its series confirm that Fionna and Cake are real, but they exist in an alternate reality that resembles the world prior to the Mushroom War and many of the characters are human versions of themselves.
- In this reality, Fionna is an ordinary working woman and Cake is her normal pet cat.
- Many past characters from the original series - including and especially the gender-swapped versions from the Fionna and Cake episodes - appear as human versions of themselves.
- The ones that do not seem to be gender-swapped include Starchy, Lemonhope, Hot Dog Princess, and some Banana Guards.
- In Queenie's bus, there's a sign referencing a company seemingly owned by Marshall Lee's mom, Abadeer's Vacuums, and Queenie's accounting business and boat rentals.
- When she is disguised in the bus, Queenie holds a newspaper showing a crown, the classic (magical) version of Cake and a woman who resembles Betty Grof.
- Fionna's alarm clock has a design that represents BMO.
- The city aquarium’s decorative penguins references Gunter.
- Gary Prince's latte art is a reference to the Swan, one of the animal transportations the Princess Bubblegum uses.
- In the opening, the toy that Cake plays with resembles Science, Princess Bubblegum's candy corn lab rat.
- One of the posters in the Numbered Facets games shop shows a sword with a design similar to the one Fionna used in "The Prince Who Wanted Everything".
- The Betty statue in the fountain was renovated "12 years ago", which is the same time gap between Betty's merger with GOLB in "Come Along With Me" and the year this show takes place.
- One hotel sign has a Magic Man's hat decoration, which Betty used to wear before her fusion with GOLB.
- Marshall Lee's dark skin is a reference to the mother of his gender-swapped counterpart, Marceline. This indicates this universe doesn't have demons like her dad who influenced her genetics.
- Out-of-universe, this could be a tribute to Donald Glover, his voice actor.
- Some of the people in the bus have dreams that resemble their counterparts from the Land of Ooo, such as the Lady In Turtleneck, Banana Guards and Fern.
- The architecture of the houses, buildings and even the street strangely have visual glitches.
- The end credits shows Fionna and Cake having the same dream. While Cake's dream have a more washed-out color due to the fact she is a cat, both dreams represent Finn and Jake's Tree House in the shape of a regular building.
- This episode reveals that Fionna's last name is Campbell. Her gender-swapped counterpart, Finn's biological mother, Minerva's last name is also Campbell.
Cultural References[]
- The Ratbus from Fionna's dream is modeled after the Catbus from the Studio Ghibli film My Neighbor Totoro.[1]
- Many aspects of Fionna's dream are homages to Sailor Moon:
- Her outfit, which consists of a white-and-blue Japanese school uniform, white knee-high boots, and round bunny hair pins, strongly resembles Usagi's sailor scout outfit. Fionna previously wore a Sailor Moon-inspired outfit in her debut episode.[1]
- The mysterious Ice Prince appears on a nearby rooftop and makes a romantic gesture towards Fionna in a manner similar to Tuxedo Mask. He is voiced by Robbie Daymond, the same actor who plays Tuxedo Mask in the Viz English dub.
- When Fionna activates her skates in her dream, she exclaims "Hans Brinker Action, Go!". This is a reference to the children's novel Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates.[1]
- During the scene when Fionna wakes up from her dream, she turns on the TV and sees Cheers on every channel. Cheers is a show that ran for 11 seasons, from 1982 to 1993.
- The stickers on Marshall Lee's guitar case have names on them that resemble real punk bands: for instance, "Daikini Kill," is likely a reference to the punk band Bikini Kill.
- Fionna's cell phone model is highly similar to those of Nokia 3000 series.
- When Ellis P. throws peanuts at Fionna expecting the squirrels to attack her, they don't, including Stanley, to which he exclaims "Et tu, Stanley?". This is a reference to the Latin phrase "Et tu, Brute?" (Also you, Brutus?) supposedly said by the Roman dictator Julius Caesar, right before being assassinated by his friend Marcus Junius Brutus, upon recognizing him as one of the assassins.
Episode Connections[]
- Cheers was previously referenced on the original series in the episode "Simon & Marcy", wherein Simon Petrikov sang the show's theme song twice.
- Fionna's delivery of the line "Stop acting crazy!" is similar to Marceline's line to Ice King in "I Remember You".
- Fionna being dumped by DJ Flame mirrors Finn being dumped by Flame Princess in "Frost & Fire".
- The end of this episode takes place at the same time as the end of the second episode, "Simon Petrikov".
- The gibberish that Cake hears from her point of view is similar to the nonsense language spoken by Magic Man's living toys in "All the Little People".
Errors[]
- When Fionna's alarm clock goes off the second time, it says 7:40. However, after she sees Cheers play on every channel, her clock reads 7:30 again.
