Censorship of Adventure Time

Adventure Time has been heavily censored on non-American localizations of Cartoon Network. The censorship of these localizations removes or makes changes to various scenes and statements in the show that may be deemed inappropriate for younger viewers. Although PAL acceleration (for frame rate issue) may have contributed to the shortened time, most of the censorship involves lines that have been removed due to sexually suggestive innuendo, or scenes that were considered too violent or frightening for younger viewers.

The censorship may have been performed by Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific, the owner of Cartoon Network channels in Asia and Oceania. There are some instances where the closed captions still retain some of the dialogue that was removed.

This censorship does not carry over to other channels as episodes are currently being aired in Australia on GO! and ABC3 uncensored (although GO shows several different episodes with scenes cut out on occasion). Also, like other series that were originally censored on Cartoon Network Australia, the DVD version of Adventure Time has been released uncensored by Madman Entertainment with a PG rating.

Adventure Time has received heavy censorship in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Serbia, Spain, Poland, Latin America, Turkey and Portugal. Below is a list of scenes that were found to be censored in specific locations. Note that this list is incomplete as new censored scenes are constantly being discovered.

Season 1

Slumber Party Panic

• Princess Bubblegum mentioning that she used to date Mr. Cream Puff was cut in Australia and the Philippines.
• Princess Bubblegum saying "You promised you wouldn't freakin' tell anyone!" in Finn's face was changed to "You promised you wouldn't tell anyone!" in Cartoon Network Philippines and UK.
• Shaved time: 3.6 seconds (excluding Cartoon Network Philippines and UK)

Trouble in Lumpy Space

This episode has the most edited content in Australian airings, but "Storytelling" has the most shaved time:

• At the beginning, when everybody was at the Mallow Tea Party, Finn said, "Princess, this tea party sucks in a big way. But thanks for the invite." The word "sucks" has been muted, so the line says, "Princess, this tea party....in a big way! But thanks for the invite."
• "Make Out" from "Make-Out Point" has been blocked out, making it "The Point."
• Any sexual references were cut out of the episode, such as Melissa saying "L.S.P., you're so bad..."
• The part when Monty says, "Why are you sucking up to us?" was cut.
• The sentence said by Lumpy Space Princess, "I'm really really sorry Finn, but I can't help you, because my parents are horrible idiots!" was edited, leaving, "I'm really really sorry Finn, but I can't help you."
• The other sentence said by Lumpy Space Princess, "My friend Melissa has a car, but she's dating my ex-boyfriend Brad." was edited to, "My friend Melissa has a car."
• This sentence was changed from, "Melissa, you should totally drive us to Make-Out Point, to make out with hot boys." to "Melissa, you should drive us to The Point, to..."
• The sentence was changed from, "Yeah, lumpiness sucks!" to "Yeah, lumpiness."
• The sentence was changed from, "This orb is the antidote, brah." to "This orb is the antidote.," because "brah" sounds like the homophone "bra."
• Finn saying "Slam-a-cow!" was cut out.
• Monty saying "Jam on, man." was changed to "On, man." because the Cartoon Network executives thought "Jam on" meant something sexual.
• Lumpy Space Princess saying "Shucks!" was cut as well.
• Shaved time: 13.9 seconds (Australia and Philippines)

Prisoners of Love

• "Sleds are for suckers!" was cut out.
• Finn and Jake arguing about the context that "sexy hot" is used in was cut.
• "I try to be such a good husband for girls." was cut.

Tree Trunks

• Tree Trunks mentioning seducing the Brain Beast and Finn talking to her about it were cut.
  • The following was cut in reruns in Spain and reruns in the UK:

Tree Trunks: But I thought Finn told me that I was a top notch adventurer. And my adventurer instincts tell me to seduce that tentacle critter with my womanly charms and elephant prowess.

Jake: Uhh, no way.

• Tree Trunks saying "I'm the sexiest adventurer in the world!" was also removed in Australia and Philippines and in reruns in Spain and reruns in the UK.
• The following was cut in reruns in Spain and reruns in the UK:

Tree Trunks: ...and I'll accept your apology if you let me kiss your cheek.

Finn: Uhhhh, I don't know, I--

Jake: Whoa! Let her kiss your cheek, man. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

• The first two Crystal Guardian lines were cut in reruns in Spain and the UK as well.
• Shaved time: 17.1 seconds in Australia abd Philippines and 39 seconds in reruns in Spain and UK.

The Enchiridion!

• The Heart Beast exploding and blood splattering all over the screen was cut.
• Finn kicking the Dark Magician in the groin was edited, so when Finn's foot struck him, it would cut to a close-up of Finn's head shouting, "NEVER!" and the smoke dissipating after Finn kicked him. The clip of Finn's head was taken from the scene a few seconds later when Finn punched the Key-per.This was edited in Australia and the Philippines.
• Mannish referencing Finn's "nard-kicking ability" was edited in Australia, so it would say "kicking ability."
• The Adventure Time logo at the end was cut in Australia, likely because of the non-sequitur war sound effects in the background.
• Shaved time: 5 seconds (Australia abd Philippines)

The Jiggler

• Some of the Baby song was edited, such as "I gotta tuck you in, girl."
• Any scene with the torn picture of the nude woman was zoomed into Finn, Jake and the Jiggler.
  • This was done despite the fact that the creators of Adventure Time revealed the supposed nude woman was just wearing a faulty bikini, and it was only pure coincidence that the watercolor was damaged.
• Shaved time: 2.75 seconds (Australia and Philippines)

Ricardio the Heart Guy

• The whole scene where Ice King accidentally kisses Jake's butt was cut. However, the scene in which Jake talks to Finn about how he wants Princess Bubblegum to kiss him as the Ice King did with Jake's butt was not cut, making it a rather confusing scene.
  • Surprisingly, when "Ricardio the Heart Guy" first aired in Australia, that scene wasn't cut. However, the censors must have recognized the (supposed by them) sexual reference in Jake's butt and quickly "patched up" the episode to make it cleaner.
• The word "patoot" was cut as well.
• The scene when Ricardio comes to the container and breaks glass bottles for stabbing the air was censored also in Spain.
• The following lines were cut in Spain, Italy, Australia, Philippines and the UK.

Princess Bubblegum: Finn!! Jake!!

[She is tied up in the rope from earlier and Ricardio is next to her with the broken bottle in his hand.]

Ricardio: You were right all along, Finn! Now I'm going to cut out Princess Bubblegum's heart and make out with it!

Finn: Not if I can help it!

• The following was also cut in Spain, Australia, Italy, and the UK:

Ricardio: One step closer and I'll remove her heart!!

Princess Bubblegum: Finn! I feel like a big idiot for doubting you! He was just so engaging! ...But his knowledge on plantoids is actually pretty weak.

My Two Favorite People

• In Australia and the Philippines, Lady Rainicorn only says "Come on my darling" to Jake, instead of the full line, "Come on my darling, wrap your legs around me." when she first wears the translator.
• The scene where Jake says "No, you go ahead and you have fun with my girlfriend!" was changed to "No, you go ahead!" in Australia and the Philippines.
• In Cartoon Network Asia, the scene where Tiffany takes out a sword was cut.
• In Spain and Italy, the scene where Finn spits to Tiffany was cut in reruns.
• Shaved time: approx. 6 seconds in Australia and the Philippines and 3 seconds in Spain and Italy reruns

Memories of Boom Boom Mountain

• The guy hitting the other guy over the head with a cup at the beginning of the episode was cut in Australia and the Philippines.
• "No, it's raunchy and maddening! Oh, all those men and their disgusting, fantastic bodies!" was changed only to "No!" in Australia and Philippines.
• "...like a cherub with his bottom out." was cut as well. This was only done in Australia abd the Philippines.
• During the October 12, 2013 airing of this episode, the first "Boom-Boom" flashback was entirely cut out in Australia.
• The Adventure Time logo at the end was cut in Spain due to the war sounds.
• Shaved time: 10.7 seconds in Australia and Philippines and 3.3 seconds in Spain

Wizard

• Near the end of the episode when Finn and Jake were listening to the skeleton man after their clothes were disintegrated, the camera was zoomed into the skeleton man, presumably so no one could see Finn's bottom. This was only done in Australian and Filipino airings.
• Shaved time: 0 seconds

Evicted!

• In Australia and Philippines, Marceline's phrase of "I carved it into this tree years ago, before you two rascals started squatting in it." was changed to "I carved it into this tree years ago, before you two started squatting in it."
  • Apparently, the edit was choppy and obvious, due to the fact that Marceline's head faced Finn quickly.
• The scene where Marceline appears in the window and scares Finn was cut in Australia and Philippinesto after she taps on the window, Finn squints and screams.
• When Cartoon Network Philippines aired this episode the scene where Marceline was hula-hooping in the Fire Kingdom was cut.
  • Also the close-up of Marceline hissing at the light was cut.
• "You're pathetic! [Spits]" was cut in Italy.
• Shaved time: approx. 0.12 seconds

City of Thieves

• The following scene was cut in reruns in Spain:

• "We're virgin islands! [Cherubs fly from off-screen, playing a trumpet and a harp. They steal the swords from Finn that he stole earlier.]" was also cut in reruns in Spain.
• Shaved time: approx. 17 seconds in Spain reruns

The Witch's Garden

• All scenes with Jake manipulating his chest while in the man-baby body were cut in Australia.
• In Latin America, the scene where Jake farts on Finn's face was inicially cut. Now it's uncensored.
• "Which one of you mortals wants to mate with all this?" by Gary was cut in Australia and the Philippines.
  • The entire dialogue was cut in reruns in Spain:

Gary: Which one of you mortals wants to mate with [Gesturing over her body] all this? Heh heh heh...

Finn: Oh, um... How do I say, "You're the grossest thing ever," without offending you?

• Shaved time: 5.62 seconds in Australia and Philippines, 11 seconds in reruns in Spain.

What is Life?

• The captions in the book for different objects were cut out in Australia.
• "And I know just the dumbhole who can give us some." was changed to the sentence "And I know who can give us some." in Australia and Philippines.
• The bra shown in Ice King's magazine was removed from the screen in Spain.
• The words "private particles" were cut in Australia, as it was feared to be a reference to the Ice King's crotch.
• The phrase "You can mate with robot princesses!" was cut in Australia and Philippines.
• Shaved time: 6.8 seconds in Australia and Philippines, none in Spain and UK.

When Wedding Bells Thaw

• In the wedding scene, the sentence, "Y'know, even though the Ice King is a wad, I'm still happy for him." was edited to "I'm still happy for him." in Australia and Philippines.
• "And to think I was happy for that son of a toot!" was cut in Australia.
• Shaved time: 5.4 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

Dungeon

• The scene where the demon cat is telling Finn that he will munch on his eyeballs, unzip his skin and wear him 'like a little coat' and do other torturing things was cut out. In the UK the eyeball line is left in however. This was also done in reruns in Italy and Spain; however, the line where he says he will unzip his skin and wear him like a little coat and Finn's "Unzip this" was cut since initial airings in Spain.
• The "Key Song" was modified in Australia and Philippines, removing "I want to have your baby."
• All of the scene between "And your dog isn't with you" and "Crud crud crud crud crud" was cut in the UK and in reruns in Spain.
• The Guardian Angel telling Finn that she will cook him and eat his flesh was cut in Australia, Spain reruns, Latin America, Italy, and the UK.
• The scene with the spitting monster was cut in the UK and in reruns in Spain. This also cuts the important dialogue - "The challenges were impossible! But you would've blown right through them".
• Shaved time: 22 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

The Duke

• "I should have asked if these were like, her eggs or something." was cut in Australia abd Philippines.
• "You son of a bleep-blob!" was cut in Australia.
  • In the Portuguese dub, "You son of a bleep-blop!" was censored and replaced with "You son of a mangy dog!".
• "I have something sucky to confess." to "I have something to confess." in Australia and Philippines.
• "Aw, shucks." was cut in Australia and Philippines.
• Shaved time: 10.8 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

Freak City

• In the UK and Italy, the entire scene where Magic Man calls over the bird, then turns it inside out using magic, and Jake's reaction, were all cut. This is a cut of 19 seconds.
• The two-headed monster saying "Our crotch! Our evil crotch!" was cut to say, "Ow!" That only this scene was edited, while Cartoon Network Australia and Philippines left in words that are normally censored, such as "sucks," "nuts," "freak," and "jerk" suggests inconsistency in the censoring of episodes.
• In the UK and Spain reruns, the verse from the song "The Hero Boy Named Finn" where Finn talks about spitting on life's name was removed.
• The scene of Kim saying that she fricking hates Trudy was cut in Portugal and the UK.
• Shaved time: 12.5 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

Donny

• Donny shoving the chicken into the mailbox in the beginning scene, then the close-up of him squeezing the eggs out of it was cut in Australia and Philippines.
• "Maybe you'd wanna hang out with a couple of rascals like me and Jake." was changed to "Maybe you'd wanna hang out with me and Jake." in Australia and Philippines.
• Shaved time: 7.2 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

Henchman

• The scene that would appear to be Marceline biting the red bow tie man in the neck was edited in Australia, so that only Finn saying "Noooo!" in the next scene could be seen.
  • Marceline asking Finn if he was thinking the white bow tie "sorta" looked like a bra was cut as well. This was cut in Philippines and reruns in Italy and Spain (along with Finn's reaction).
• In Australia and the Philippines, Marceline's "Fisherman Song" only included "You look so cute, sitting in your boat..." instead of the other lyrics, "I wanna suck out your eyeballs and rip out your throat."
  • The entire song was cut in reruns in Italy and Spain. In the UK all of the song was cut, cutting out 20 seconds of the episode. Specifically everything between Marceline's "I wrote this next song about a fisherman" and "Don't do what?" was cut in that regions.
• Finn saying that he was going to murder the Dimple Plant Monster was cut in Australia.
  • The short scene when Finn cut the Dimple Plant's arm was cut as well.
• The line "I saved my bro from a scum-sucking vampire!" was removed entirely in Australia and Philippines.
• Marceline trying to scare Jake was cut in Cartoon Network Philippines.
• Shaved time: 32.5 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

Rainy Day Daydream

• "Whoa, I've never seen a knife storm before. It's beautiful..." was simply edited to only say "Whoa..." in Australia and Philippines. However, on one of the airings, the whole line was kept in.
• Finn and Jake using the bucket elevator to get to the attic while barely dodging the knives was cut in Australia.
• "Here come's a soul-eater! Snap its neck! [Finn jumps up and does so. A weapon is heard charging up.]" was cut in reruns in Italy.
• "Dang, girl. If you weren't a figment of my imagination, I'd want to have your baby." was cut in Australia and Philippines.
• Finn's phrase "Oh, see dude? You suck now! Crap, it's your imagination. You need that thing" was edited in some countries. The "Oh see dude? You suck now!" part was cut out in Australia, and the word "crap" was changed to "cripes" in the UK. However, in the second audio track in Spain airings, which teoretically uses the UK edits, "crap" is removed from the line, so in the latest half second of the line Finn opens his mouth but he says nothing (the Spanish track hasn't been affected).
• "I imagined my mom naked!" was cut in reruns in Spain and the UK, giving the following line "She's clothed now." any sense. This was changed to "I imaginated the Ice King naked" in Italy.
• Shaved time: approx. 13.5 seconds in Australia, 3 seconds in reruns in Spain.

What Have You Done?

• The quote by the Ice King, "I think I heard the word 'virile' in there." was cut out in Australia annd Philippines.
• Shaved time: approx. 4 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

His Hero

• "His Hero" is believed by Adventure Time fans to have been refused to be aired on Cartoon Network Australia and Philippines because of the plot (perhaps) promoting violence.
  • However, its Filipino-dubbed version was aired on Philippine local channel block, "TV5 presents Cartoon Network".
• The lines "Dude, we got to do something to help him." and "I could teach him how not to be such a spaz." were cut in the UK (and subsequently in Spain) due to offensive language in that region.
• The shot of Billy's void was cut in Latin America (but as August 24, 2014, this episode aired uncensored).
• This scene was cut in Latin America at first:

Old Lady: And don't take advice from old people! [Continues dancing]

Finn: Yeah... Yeah...! YEAH!! That old lady has a point!

Jake: Wait, didn't she say not to take advice from old peo—

Finn: It's all so clear to me!

• The shot of Finn's legs and hands when he was saying "This old lady is alive because of these!" was cut at first in Latin America as well.
• Shaved time: 11 minutes and 0.8 seconds in Australia, 15 seconds in the European version and around 25 seconds in Latin America

Gut Grinder

• The part where Sharon says that she thinks Jake is "hot" was cut to "And I like to dress up like Jake" only in the Australian and Filipino viewing for sexual references.
• Shaved time: 2.5 seconds

Season 2

It Came from the Nightosphere

• Marceline explaining what she would do to her father once she got her bass guitar back was cut in Australia.
• The leader of the Marauders appearing in his short cameo scene saying, "Then I popped his head like a cork, and then I said, 'That's what I think about the expanding earth theory!'" was edited in Australia and Philippines to not include the part about the cork, only to be covered up with normal bird chirping.
• A Fuzzy Friend saying "Who the fluff are you?" has been cut in Australia. In Cartoon Network Asia, it was cut to just "Who are you?"
• Shaved time: 5.7 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

The Eyes

• "Poo Brain means we can lure it away with music." was changed to "It means we can lure it away with music." in Australia.
• On a similar note, "Everything brainless loves music!" was changed to "Everything loves music!" in Australia and Philippines.
• Shaved time: approx. 2.3 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

Loyalty to the King

• All of the comments made by the Nice King about him liking smooth princesses were cut in Australia and Philippines
• Shaved time: 7.6 seconds in Australia and Philippines.

Blood Under the Skin

• Nearly all scenes of people in the Swamp of Embarrassment were censored in Australia and Philippines, except for their faces.
  • In reruns in Spain, Italy and the UK, Finn encountering the first showering lady was shown in full, but immediately after he encounters the second, it cuts to the air view of the swamp, removing part of the second encounter and the entire third encounter. The air view part is shown in full.
• The Ghost giving demonstrations of Drop Ball was cut in some countries.
  • In Philippines, Australia and India, it looks like Finn and Jake are ignoring the Ghost Man and proceeding to the Magic Armor while he teaches his technique. Drop Ball is a game that involves picking up a ball using your butt without dropping the ball.
  • In Turkey, the scene was entirely cut only to show how Finn and Jake enter at the home of Zeldron's armor and suddenly after they open another door, so the Ghost Man not appear until a few later.
  • The parts where the Ghost Man's butt is fully shown on-screen were cut in Latin America. This episode used to be aired uncensored.
• Shaved time: 59.2 seconds in Australia and Philippines, 14 seconds in UK.

Storytelling

Even though "Trouble in Lumpy Space" has the most edited content ever documented, "Storytelling" has the most shaved time in Australia and Philippines (without having to remove the whole episode).

• The scene when Jake spews soup into Finn's face was cut out in Latin America. The scene was only seen once. In Spain this was also shortened.
• The entire scene where Finn was trying to convince Boobafina and Mr. Fox to kiss and then forcing them to kiss was cut in Australia and Philippines. This is the longest scene that has ever been censored in Adventure Time.
• In the UK the only thing cut in this entire episode was Boobafina's line, "...because I'm now soiled!"
  • The entire line ("And now he'll never love me because I'm now soiled!") was cut in reruns in Spain.
• Finn being mauled and hit over the head with a club was cut in Australia and Philippines.
• Finn trying to convince Mrs. Cow that she doesn't need a paper bag around her PHIL FACE udder was cut in Australia abd Philippines as well, mainly due to the gross design of the udder.
• Shaved time: 2 minutes and 42.35 seconds in Australia and Philippines, 4 seconds in the UK and 12 seconds in reruns in Spain.

Slow Love

• The first snail lady poking out her breasts was cut in Australia and Philippines.
• All the scene where Jake becomes a lady snail, specifically between "Finn, you be the guy snail, and I'll be... [Shifts to appear like a lady snail] the chick snail" and "This time you be the chick and I'll be the snail dude," both included, was cut in reruns in Italy and Spain.
  • When Jake says "I'm just thinking about mating with snails." was cut to say "I'm just thinking about snails." in Australia and Philippines.
  • When Snorlock says "I'll mate with you!" was cut to say "Are you thinking about me?" in Australia and Philippines.
• The scene where the grain of salt burns Snorlock's face was cut out in Australia, except when he tips over the tree fort he uses as a shell.
• The scene where Snorlock and the Slug Lady were kissing near the Tree Fort and BMO being covered by slime were cut as well in Australia and Philippines. However, a slight noise from the original scene is heard right before the episode ends.
• Shaved time: 27.1 seconds in Australia and 39 seconds in reruns in Italy and Spain.

Power Animal

• "...with sexy, fun dancing!" was changed to "...with dancing!" in Australia and Philippines.
  • "Now it's time to power up the Plasma Ball! With sexy-fun dancing!" was cut in reruns in Spain.
• Shaved time: approx. 1.6 seconds in Australia and 6 seconds in Spain reruns.

Crystals Have Power

I wanted you, Finn, so you could be transformed into my sexy crystal king.

• The part when Finn and Jake are doing "Round 2" of "Tough Boys Contest," when Jake pinches and twists Finn's nipple was censored, replacing "Round 3" with "Round 2," leaving 2 rounds of the contest. This was done in the UK, Australia, Philippines and in reruns in Spain.
• Tree Trunks' voice saying "Get your hands off my lover!" was changed to "Get your hands off!" in Australia, Philippines and the UK (according to the second audio track in Spain airings; the Spanish audio track wasn't cut).
• Tree Trunks saying that she was the sexy crystal queen was cut in Australia and Philippines.
• Tree Trunks saying "I wanted you, Finn, so you could be transformed into my sexy crystal king" was cut in reruns in Spain. In the UK and Philippines, this line was mostly kept, but only the word "sexy" was cut out.
• Tree Trunks saying that it's not sexy for a king to call his queen bananas was cut in Spain reruns. This entire line, including the word "sexy", was kept in the UK, suggesting inconsistency with censorship.

The Other Tarts

• In the Philippines and the UK, the line "My head will be decapitated if the tarts don't make it to the ceremony" was cut.
• In the UK, the part where we think PB is going to get her head chopped off (but they were really chopping the tart) was shortened.
• In the UK, everything from and including "Because I lied to you too" to the moment when the Royal Tart Toter bursting through the door was cut for unknown reasons (possibly time). It is also possible this was cut due to the word "decapitate", but since the other references to PB getting decapitated (minus the example above) are not cut, it is unlikely they cut this large segment for that.

To Cut a Woman's Hair

• Jake saying "Kissing Princess Bubblegum on the mouth!" was changed in the Philippines and Australia to "Kissing Princess Bubblegum on the..." before he was interrupted by Finn.

  • Another instance of kissing on the lips is in the episode "Wizard Battle" (premiered August 29, 2011) due to its importance to the plot.
• Even though the word "sucks" is considered moderately explicit, it's only censored in a few episodes.
• It won't censor some things on Netflix. As of March 30, 2015, Adventure Time is no longer on Netflix.

  • Only one episode was fully censored in Latin America ("All the Little People").
  • All episodes are seen totally uncensored in a Mexican channel (Canal 5*), including "All the Little People". However, both the opening and ending for "A Glitch is a Glitch" were not aired there.
• In Spain, the early episodes (except for some episodes like "Ricardio the Heart Guy") were broadcasted uncut during the first times, but later they were being censored.
  • The UK shares the same censorship as Spain, because Spain gets the UK edits of the show.   • The UK appears to have been most lenient on seasons 2-4, and harder on seasons 1, 5, 6 and 7. In season 7 they even started censoring the word "jerk", which was never censored before.
  • Interestingly, UK appears to have gotten more lenient on other shows such as Steven Universe, but harder on Adventure Time.
• India has the same censors as the Australian version, since they share the PG rating. The same happens in New Zealand, Philippines (sometimes), Malaysia and Indonesia.
