"Cake the Cat" is the third episode of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake.
Synopsis
Cake crash lands in a fantastic new world. Fionna continues her search after witnessing something impossible.[1]
Plot
In a mysterious floating temple, Finn and Jake are running inside a mysterious temple avoiding arrows shot at them. Jake is carrying an egg who claims to not be an egg, it's just out of shape. As they get closer to the exit, a giant chicken with multiple eyes flies in. Finn and Jake form the "Jakesuit" and cut the head off the giant chicken before fist-pounding each other.
In the Time Room, Prismo was revealed to be watching them before hearing a beeping sound on his remote, so he turns up his TV wall to drown out the beeping sound. Meanwhile, Finn and Jake see Cocka-tikes on Copter-trikes, so they go to attack them, causing Prismo to wince.
Meanwhile in Fionna-world, Fionna chases after Cake who jumps into a sparkly blue portal in an ice cream stand. Fionna goes to look in there but is stunned to see that Cake isn't there. Ice Cream Queen pulls Fionna out and when Fionna calls for Cake, the vendor says she doesn't sell cake, she sells ice cream. Fionna kicks her in the stomach, apologizes and continues to search for Cake.
Back in Ooo, Simon is stunned to see Cake in his house. He wonders why he's still in his house and asks Cake if she's the portal. Realizing that she can't talk, Simon gives her the universal translator he took off the dog. He's then surprised to hear her call out for Fionna (in the same voice as the dog when he wore the translator) as she runs around and jumps on top of some boxes. Simon then realizes that the cat is Cake and asks how she got there. Cake says she heard a song and hums it, leading Simon to grab her and ask where she heard it. Cake scratches Simon's face and runs to the door, scratching on it because she wants out. She then runs around and knocks over Choose Goose's cage and runs into the little area where GOLB's statue is.
Suddenly Astrid, still dressed like Fionna, knocks on Simon's door wanting her book back. Cake runs out and Astrid points out that his cat looks just like Cake, but Simon tells the door to close, upsetting Astrid. Meanwhile, Cake runs around Up-Ton looking for Fionna. She sees someone thinking it's Fionna until looking at her face which had some purple bumps on it. Cake keeps running and a Minerva-Bot notices, asking if the cat is lost. Cake continues running until she falls off the human island into Ooo, looking at the Candy Kingdom and the Ice Kingdom. After falling into a forest, Cake takes shelter inside a tree.
Cake wakes up the next morning and takes in her surroundings before pouncing on a Squirrel toting a wagon of apples. Cake nearly claws it until seeing the Ice Thing laughing as he flies to the Ice Kingdom. Cake decides she wants to go there before the squirrel apologizes for running into her. Cake is surprised that the squirrel can talk too but the squirrel notices her voice is harsh, so he adjusts it and she tells him to stop until he gets to the cat setting, which feels right to her. Cake (sounding like her real self) is amazed since she never said what she wants before - usually she just meows and her human Fionna puts food in her bowl or cleans her poop. The squirrel agrees and says two-way communication is great, telling her all the benefits before revealing that he sells apples. The squirrel offers her an apple and she takes a bite, causing her to shrink. The squirrel admits the apples are cursed, angering Cake. The squirrel says there's magic enlarging strawberries that can un-curse her if she goes with him to the market, so she agrees to go with him.
Back in Fionna-world, Fionna is still looking for Cake and finds Ellis P. with Marshall Lee sharing a bottle of wine at the statue of Betty Grof. Fionna says thanks to them she's been searching for hours as she swipes the bottle and drinks some. Ellis P. says Cake couldn't have gotten far with her stubby little legs and Marshall Lee agrees, saying she'll turn up. Fionna tells them that while this sounds nuts, she swears she saw Cake jump into a sparkly blue portal in an ice cream cart. Marshall Lee says that does sound nuts but Ellis P. disagrees and tells her not to doubt herself. After he plays with his guts and tells her to look for the sparkly blue portal, he and Marshall Lee both fall asleep. Fionna decided to do whatever it takes to find Cake since Cake needs her.
Back in Ooo, Cake tells the squirrel that she thought she needed Fionna but she actually kinda likes being on her own. The squirrel asks who Fionna is and Cake describes her as kind of like a big clumsy cat she lives with. The squirrel guesses that she's her family but Cake says she loves her but she's more like a big bossy roommate. The squirrel says his ex-roommates were bossy too and he wasn't allowed to do anything before he left The Tree. Cake wants to make her own decisions so the squirrel wonders what she wants to do. Cake doesn't know but she'll figure it out once she gets to the blue sparkly place, so for now she's gonna follow her instincts.
Cake and the squirrel come across a big log blocking their path. Cake's instincts tell her something is off before the squirrel's ex-roommates show up to take the squirrel back to the tree. The squirrel refuses so they try to kidnap him again. Cake scratches them all but gets poked by the porcupine. The animals decide that Cake is feral so they run away. The squirrel thanks her for saving him and declares them best friends but Cake says she just doesn't like bullies and tells him to take her to the strawberries.
They finally get to the market and Cake is excited since everything's shiny to her. The squirrel takes her to his stand and tells his boss that he ran into some trouble but Cake saved him so the boss says fruit is free for heroes. Cake asks for strawberries so she gets one and takes a bite, making her grow big. The squirrel gives her an apple since Cake grew too big. After Cake eats it, she shrinks down again so the boss gives her more fruit to try. Cake eats multiple types of fruit, causing her to grow and shrink before she finally eats one that makes her go back to her regular size. Cake decides to head off to the blue sparkly place, disappointing the squirrel. Cake begins her journey but stops when she sees someone playing guitar. Cake begins to sing a song and everyone enjoys it.
Meanwhile back in Up-Ton, Simon revives Choose Goose who wonders why he saved him. Simon tells him that he's nothing more than a spell battery to him before Choose Goose tells him that he's thinking about a girl and her cat. Simon duct tapes his mouth shut and says this time he won't think about Fionna and Cake.
Back in the market, Cake is still singing and she accidentally messes everyone and everything up with her cat instincts. Everyone gets angry and Cake realizes that she messed up so they start to close in on her. The squirrel throws her a big strawberry but it smashes on the ground so he takes off and they continue to close in on Cake, who calls out for Fionna.
Back in Fionna-world, an exhausted Fionna puts up signs for a sparkly blue portal and says she's seen it. Fionna briefly falls asleep but wakes up when she hears Gary Prince using his keys to unlock the bakery. When she calls his name, he drops his groceries and says she scared him half to death as he picks up his groceries. After Gary says he's gotta get started on the morning dough, Fionna asks if he's seen Cake since she ran away yesterday, possibly into a portal. Gary apologizes and asks if there's anything he can do. Fionna asks for a frozen triple shot latte so he agrees and has her come in. When Fionna lays her head down, Gary suggests she should take a nap but Fionna says she's good. After Gary gives Fionna her latte, she thanks him before he says he's gonna get started and then they'll scour the city. Fionna takes a drink of her latte.
Back in Ooo, Simon is performing the ritual as Fionna gets a brain freeze and yells at Gary for there being too much ice. Fionna then sees sparkles in her drink and in the refrigerator as another portal forms in the back of his head and in Gary's refrigerator. Fionna goes through the portal to Ooo and is amazed that it was a portal, but is confused that it led to an apartment.
Once the portal in Simon's head closed, Fionna notices Simon and grows concerned about him. When she sees his glasses gleam, she asks if he's Ice Prince. Simon notices Fionna and says she's not real but Fionna asks if he's seen a cat go through there. Simon claims she's not real and is a manifestation of Ice King's madness. Simon grows angry at Choose Goose and grabs him before touching Fionna's face with him, saying this was his last chance to see Betty. Fionna tells Simon to knock it off but when Simon's anger grows into sadness, Fionna awkwardly gestures that she's gonna leave and calls for Cake. She tries to open the door but can't, so she wonders what kind of weirdo lives in a garage before she lifts up the door. Fionna is amazed that she's in a whole other world when she sees Up-Ton. Fionna then sees Astrid and asks if she's seen her cat. Astrid says she saw one that looks just like Cake and points out a picture of her on her copy of a Fionna and Cake fan fiction. Fionna says that's her and Astrid sees Fionna's name tag, guessing that she's an Fionna and Cake fan too. She then asks Fionna if she has anything that belongs to Cake. Fionna says she doesn't usually carry cat stuff but she gets some of Cake's cat hair off her uniform and Astrid takes one to use in order to track Cake's location with her gadget.
Fionna and Astrid ride down in a hoverbike to Cake's location in Ooo at the market and Astrid gives Fionna her Fionna hat along the way. When they notice many people closing in on Cake, Fionna leaps in to see Cake in a beheading wood block. Fionna grabs a guy to smash the wood but Cake tells her to just pull the pin. Fionna is surprised that Cake can talk and Cake agrees that Ooo is nuts. After Cake tells her to pull the pin, she sets the guy down and does so. Fionna and Cake have a reunion but everyone gets upset over their happy reunion. They go to attack but Fionna attacks everyone to defend Cake. Astrid then realizes that the duo really are Fionna and Cake and asks if they can go on an adventure. Fionna chuckles and starts to answer her but she and Cake are beamed out of Ooo by Prismo.

Trivia
- The temple in which Finn and Jake appear in is a tweaked redesigned version of Birdman’s temple from the scrapped season 1 episode “The Helmet of Thorogon".
- The Minerva-Bot in the Up-Ton city alley has the same orange blouse as the original Minerva Campbell, compared to the cyan ones from the Founder's Island.
- Originally, Cake's encounter with the Minerva-Bot was longer: in a deleted scene, Minerva goes so far as to approach Cake and offers to feed her and escort her home. Cake approaches her when she holds out her hand, but is alarmed when Minerva's hand pops open to reveal a fish, leading to her running off the side of Up-Ton.[2]
- The Two-Headed Duck bites Cake when she is falling out of the city.
- Multiple previously one-off characters from several seasons ago returns: The Owl, The Porcupine, Rainy, Mr. Goji Berry and Mrs. Goji Berry.
Cultural References
- Concept drawings of Cake's descent into Ooo by Steve Wolfhard were labeled as "now entering Toon Town". [3] This is likely a reference to Who Framed Roger Rabbit in which cartoon characters live apart from humans in a community called Toontown. In the film, Eddie Valiant had a feeling of culture shock when first visiting the wacky, zany Toontown and the concept drawing likely indicates to that Fionna and Cake would have a similar feeling when first seeing the Land of Ooo.
Episode Connections
- This is the fifth time Finn and Jake form the "Jakesuit". They previously used this form in the original series episodes "The Silent King", "Jakesuit" and "Reboot" and the Distant Lands special, "Together Again".
- The mountains from the Ice Kingdom are shown to have undergone key visual transformations in the passage of years since Gunter turned into the Ice Thing in "Come Along With Me".
- This is also connected to how the "Ice Thingdom" will look like thousand years in the future as shown in the opening of "Come Along With Me".
- This episode shows a version of Jake that is still alive. Jake was absent in the Distant Lands episode "Obsidian" and the previous episode in this series, with dialogue in the latter case heavily implying he is deceased. Likewise, Finn is seen with the same tattoo of Jake, only his hair and beard are shorter and with a lighter tone of yellow.
- The scene of Fionna chasing after Cake from "Fionna Campbell" is seen again and reveals what Fionna was up to after Cake jumped in the portal to Ooo.
- The apples cursed with a shrinking effect from "Up a Tree" reappear. The Tree from the aforementioned episode is also mentioned and pictured in a static flashback.
- Cake is given the universal translator previously used by the Dog Tourist in the preceding episode "Simon Petrikov".
- It is similar to the ones in "My Two Favorite People" and "Her Parents".
- Choose Goose is revealed to still be alive after Simon's ritual in the previous episode.
- Cake transforming a Hot Dog Knight into a normal sausage is a foreshadowing to the episode "The Winter King", when it was revealed Fionna and Cake can contaminate other universes, taking away their magic.
- Fionna describes Cake talking as one of her "top three fantasies." The remainder of her fantasies will be revealed over the course of the season.
