"BMO" is the first hour-long episode that is part of Adventure Time: Distant Lands.

Synopsis

When there’s a deadly space emergency in the farthest reaches of the galaxy, there’s only one hero to call, and it’s probably not BMO. Except that this time it is![2]

Trivia

  • This is the first episode to take place before the events of the main series that isn't a flashback or dream.
  • The show on the TV in the bunny hotel resembles art from Rumble Jaw, the fake show made to cover Distant Lands' existance.
  • The animation in CGO's backstory was done by David Ferguson, who also animated the episode "Water Park Prank."
  • CGO, the poorly made robot, is voiced by Simone Giertz, who is known for creating poorly made robots.
  • The episode's end credits feature footage of the real-life BMO currently aboard the International Space Station.[3][4]

Cultural References

  • CGO can be heard singing "Tossed Salads & Scrambled Eggs," the theme song from the sitcom Frasier. This is the third time a sitcom theme has been sung in Adventure Time, along with the themes from Cheers and Mr. Belvedere.
  • The city of Seattle is mentioned by CGO. This is the fourth time a real-life location has been mentioned in Adventure Time, along with England, Korea, and Scandinavia.
  • The scene where BMO travels at hyperspeed with the help of Olive is reminescent of the iconic Stargate Sequence from the 1968 sci-fi film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Episode Connections

  • At the beginning of the special, BMO was being sent to Mars in a MO Co. rocket to plant potatoes. Moe previously showed interest in Mars in the flashback at the end of "The More You Moe, The Moe You Know," where blueprints for the Martian colony could be seen on his desk.
  • BMO gives the name "Ricky" to Twinkle Toes, just as they did to Sparkle in "BMO Lost."
  • Various alien species from throughout Adventure Time are seen.
    • A Void Caster, members of Cuber's species, and a mantis alien from "High Strangeness," are all seen throughout the market in the desert pod.
    • In CGO's backstory, the gray aliens from "High Strangeness" appear.
  • Y5 and Mr. M are seen playing the game Card Wars, which is a holographic version of the one seen in "Card Wars."
  • When trapped in the chasm in the jungle pod, Football shouts "Dirt hole" in a manner similar to how they did in "Football."
  • BMO playing the role of an old west sherrif is similar to his role as cowboy in "Angel Face."
  • BMO's rainbow-colored subconcious selves seen as they "die" were first seen when they contemplated on Moe's death in "The More You Moe, The Moe You Know."

Storyline Analysis

  • Mr. M  is heavily suggested to be Martin Mertens.
    • Both characters are voiced by Stephen Root.
    • The "M" in Mr. M's name matches with both Martin's first and last names.
    • Mr. M's shady con artist actions are very similar to Martin's.
    • When removing his boots, Mr. M's skin tone matches Martin's.
    • Mr. M remarks on kids "always calling out their deadbeat parents," which Finn would later do after his run-ins with Martin.
    • The special ends with Mr. M getting stranded in space, which also happens to Martin in "Escape From the Citadel," "The Visitor," and "On the Lam."
    • Mr. M's final line is "Here comes the rascal," which Martin also says in "On the Lam," and "Min and Marty."
  • CGO's backstory offer insight on the circumstances that caused the huge crater seen on post-Mushroom War Earth. As various mushroom clouds detonate on the Earth, there appears to be some sort of giant electric ball that disintegrates part of the planet. It is unknown what caused this particular event, though it is likely the result of a destructive weapon used for the war similar to the Mushroom Bomb.
